Is Pelvic Floor Therapy Really Necessary? Here’s the Truth.
If you’ve ever wondered, “Do I really need pelvic floor therapy?” or thought, “Other people have it worse, I should just suck it up,” you’re not alone.
So many people quietly deal with leaking, pelvic pain, heaviness, constipation, painful sex, or “weird” symptoms for years because they’ve believed one sneaky lie:
Taking care of your pelvic health is indulgent — something you do when everything else in life is handled.
I want to be very clear:
Pelvic floor therapy is essential healthcare - not a luxury or frivolous care. You deserve the right to live symptom free.
As a pelvic floor therapist and clinic owner, this is a conversation I have with patients Every. Single. Day.
Where the “indulgent” story comes from:
Most people don’t grow up hearing about pelvic floor therapy or pelvic floor physical therapy as a normal part of health care. Instead, they hear things like:
“That’s just what happens after you have kids.”
“Of course things feel different as you get older.”
“Just do some Kegels and see if it helps.”
“The pain is all in your head”
Or the classic: “Everything looks normal on your tests.”
At the same time, we live in a culture that praises pushing through, doing more with less sleep, and putting everyone else first. Especially if you’re a mom, caretaker, or high-achiever, it can feel selfish to carve out time and money for your own body.
So pelvic health physical therapy gets lumped in with “nice-to-have” spa days or trendy wellness treatments, instead of what it actually is:
Evidence-based medical care for your muscles, nerves, joints, organs, hormones, and nervous system.
Pelvic symptoms are not “just annoying”
Because pelvic floor issues are often invisible and rarely talked about, it’s easy to brush them off as “just annoying” or “not serious enough” to deserve help.
But let’s be honest about what these symptoms really do:
Leaking every time you laugh, run, or pick up your kids can shape your whole day. (If you’ve ever wondered, “Is leaking after kids normal?” — no, it’s common, but not normal.)
Pelvic pain or painful sex can affect your relationships, mental health, and sense of self.
Prolapse or heaviness can make you second-guess movement, exercise, even simple tasks.
Tailbone pain can make it miserable to sit, drive, or work.
Constipation and bathroom issues can rule your routine in ways that feel isolating and embarrassing.
These are not small inconveniences! They change how you move, what you say yes or no to, and how you feel in your own body. And we know THAT MATTERS.
Whether you’re dealing with pelvic pain, prolapse, painful sex, or long-standing tailbone pain, your symptoms are worth paying attention to.
You don’t need to be “falling apart” to deserve support
A common thing we hear in our pelvic health clinic is:
“I feel kind of silly being here. It’s not that bad… YET.”
Here’s the reframe:
You do not have to wait until you’re miserable to be “worthy” of care. Do not wait until you feel like you need to ‘divorce your lady bits’ (actual quote).
You are allowed to:
Come in early, when symptoms are just starting or “mild.”
Get help even if your scans, labs, or exams are “normal” but in your gut you know something isn’t right.
Seek care because you want to feel better, not because you’ve reached a breaking point.
Not rely on one-size-fits-all programs or recommendations (especially from questionable online ‘experts’)
Early care with a qualified pelvic floor therapist isn’t indulgent; it’s wise. It often means faster relief, fewer compensations patterns to work through, and getting back to feeling at home in your body.
Who can benefit from pelvic floor therapy?
Pelvic health physical therapy isn’t just for one specific season or diagnosis. Some of the symptoms/diagnosis we work with include:
Postpartum for leaking, pain, prolapse, or feeling “not put back together” after birth (even years later)
Pelvic pain or painful sex, whether it’s been there occasionally, for months or decades
Prolapse, heaviness, or pressure — especially if you’ve been told to “just avoid lifting”
Tailbone pain, including pain that started after a fall, birth, or seemingly out of nowhere
Endometriosis, to address pain, tension, and the way your body has been guarding for years
Fertility, supporting circulation, alignment, stress, and how the nervous system is responding
Menopause, addressing dryness, pain, urgency, frequency, and changes in tissue
Male pelvic floor therapy for testicular pain, groin pain, urinary symptoms, post-prostatectomy changes, or pelvic pain no one has quite figured out
If you’ve ever wondered, “Do I need pelvic floor therapy, or should I just live with this?” — it’s worth at least a conversation.
“But I don’t have time / money / energy…”
These are very real concerns. And still, I’ll gently offer this:
How much time, money, and energy are you already spending working around your symptoms?
Buying pads, liners, and extra laundry
Scheduling your day around bathroom trips or pain
Avoiding workouts, intimacy, or events
Trying random gadgets, exercises, or products that never really solve the problem
Investing in focused, expert pelvic floor therapy often ends up costing less — in time, dollars, and emotional energy — than years of “managing” on your own.
What care looks like at South Texas Pelvic Health
When you come to South Texas Pelvic Health, our goal is simple:
Understand your story, find the root contributors, and create a pelvic rehab plan that actually fits your life.
That means:
One-on-one, 60-minute sessions with a specialized pelvic floor PT or OT
A whole-body assessment (feet, hips, ribcage, breathing, nervous system — not just your pelvic floor in isolation)
Hands-on treatment to address what’s tight, weak, overworking, or not coordinating well
Movement and strength strategies that fit your season — newborn life, demanding work, athletics, menopause, and beyond
Space to ask every question, name every fear, and feel heard without judgment
We don’t hand you a sheet of Kegels and send you on your way. We stay curious about why your body is responding the way it is — and we walk with you as things change.
You don’t have to earn this
If you’ve been waiting for the “right” time, the perfect schedule, or the magic sign that says, “Okay, now you’re allowed to get help,” let this be it.
You don’t have to:
Hit rock bottom
Check every symptom box
Justify your pain by how long it’s been there
You’re allowed to want less pain, less leaking, and more trust in your body.
You’re allowed to want a professional opinion.
You’re allowed to say, “I’m not okay with this being my new normal.”
That’s not indulgent.
That’s honoring your body.
